Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a method of stimulating reflex areas in the feet or hands that correspond to each and every gland, organ and part of the body. Correct stimulation of reflex areas relieves stress and tension, deeply relaxing the whole body. This therapeutic relaxation serves to normalise the body’s functioning, effectively facilitating the body’s healing process, revitalising and enhancing your total health.

Where does Reflexology originate?

Although reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, Indian and China, it wasn’t until 1913 that ear, nose and throat specialist William Fitzgerald introduced his therapy to the West as Zone therapy. In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone therapy into what is now known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

What can I expect from my reflexology session?

As the reflex areas of your feet or hands are stimulated you may from time to time experience pinprick like sensations. These sensations result from sensitivity that frequently reflects the presence of tension in the corresponding part of the body. If it is not comfortable for you, you should ask the therapist to decrease the amount of pressure that they are using. It is important that you feel comfortable with the stimulation, as relaxation is the primary aim of reflexology.

Does reflexology diagnose?

No. Reflexology identifies where stress and tension is located in the body. This can be a valuable assistance to the diagnose process, but is not sufficient by itself. .

Can reflexology do me any harm?

No. Reflexology is essentially harmless. The therapeutic relaxation that reflexology produces facilitates the body’s release of toxins. On very rare occasions this release of toxins may bring about perspiration, a nauseous feeling, a headache, or a bad taste in the mouth. These minor discomforts are evidence of the body’s healing process, are very temporary and are not serious. Most people enjoy pleasant relaxed and/or energised feelings after a reflexology session.
